Are you, an Anti-Goaler ? You know who you are. You’ve “done goals in the past” but are tired of never getting the goals that you just don’t bother. I work with people who’ve experienced this outcome, and it’s frustrating to watch. It’s also discouraging from their point of view and potentially devastating to their success. What if it’s not you? What if there are members of your team, circle of friends, or your family who you’d like to work through the “Anti-Goaler” disorder, what can you do to help? Take a look at the bullet points below and give it a shot. Whether you’re looking to better your own Goal Getting or someone else’s, these steps will help you!

  • Start small! Don’t go CRAZY, OFF the CHARTS, RECORD-SETTING! Although all of those amazing goals would be great to accomplish, you or the person you’re helping need to start from a more reasonable place. Use the S.M.A.R.T. concept when setting goals:
    • Specific
    • Measurable
    • Attainable
    • Realistic
    • Time-based

You get the point. Start as small as is necessary to build some confidence and experience what it feels like to WIN instead of losing!

    • After you’ve experienced a reasonable amount of success, stretch your legs a little. Instead of walking, jog, instead of jogging, run, instead of ruing, sprint, and instead of sprinting, get on a bike and ride! To properly carry out this step, take some quiet time and start to think about what you’d like your life to look like, be like, feel like, and where you’d like to end up on your journey. Deeper thinking will produce more specific goals!
    • Reflect and think about what is possible. You are the one molding the clay of your future. Build a 1, 3, or 5-year vision and dig deep into what you’re working to accomplish. A clear vision will get you out of bed in the morning with the determination to succeed!
    • As you start to experience, no matter how small, celebrate the success! Believe me, some of your future goals are going to be more challenging so take the time to celebrate and it will make it easier to start climbing that next hill or mountain!

If you haven’t noticed, I love goals and can’t tell you how many amazing stories I’ve gotten to experience by watching people transform their businesses and their lives. Try these tips or use them to help someone you care about. Eventually, their results and/or your results, will erase the Anti-Goaler label and turn you into a Goal Getter!
