Legacy: Now that’s a word that gets kicked around improperly on a regular basis. The definition doesn’t do it justice either. Webster, defines the word as, “something (such as property or money) that is received from someone who has died,” but that doesn’t quite cut it. I found a better explanation/description on Bestow.com where it states:

…leaving a personal legacy involves more than the financial assets you bestow on the younger generation. A lasting legacy is all about the actions you take during your life and the way those actions affect how people remember you.

Now we’re getting there. How do you want to be remembered? In his book, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen Covey writes about his 2nd habit of “Begiing with the end in mind.” He has you do an exercise where you imagine your own funeral and how people will remember you going forward. I always like to back that up and think about how I’ll be remembered or talked about at my retirement or at a significant birthday party. That way I’ll be able to enjoy the thoughtful comments and memories instead of being deceased. Makes sense, right?

When we work with our coaching clients, we help them get a clearer picture of what they want their legacy to be, then we put steps in place to help them get there. As you can imagine, this is a mountain top away from where they’re at today. The size and height of that mountain varies from person to person, but it always involves work to get there. Even though this is part of your long-term Goals, the activities that you do on an everyday basis get you closer and closer to achieving those Goals in your personal and professional life.

What about you? Have you written it down and committed to achieving it?
