What’s Your Number?

Updated: Mar 10

I was networking last week, and I had a Zoom meeting with a young, successful, lady named Katie who reads 3 to 4 books…per year? No. Per month? Nope, sorry. Per week! That’s right. She reads 3 to 4 books per week. What a great example to learn from and re-evaluate your own information intake. It was Ray Kroc who said, “When you're green, you’re growing. When you're ripe, you rot.” But here are some stats that are available out there that raise an eyebrow.

A survey done by the Jenkins Group has faced some scrutiny, but in a nutshell, the survey says that 33% of high school graduates never read another book after high school. In addition, 42% of college graduates never read another book after college. What? Is it all of the cram studying that leads college graduates to swear off books for life? Either way, you slice it, several surveys taken show that reading is on the decline. People are not continuing to feed their minds the way they should, except, of course, for my networking contact Katie…and a lot of highly successful individuals.

So, what about you? What are you going to do about it? What’s your number? I know that in my case, I’m stepping up my game. I’m going to block more time every week to consume more books! I’ll also be counting audible books, but they only count if I’m giving them a proper amount of attention. It’s easy to listen to an audible book at 2X speed while doing 14 other tasks…but that doesn’t count.

Also, in addition to audible books, it’s a great idea to actually physically read books as well so I’ll continue to put that in the mix. Lastly, what’s your reading speed? I am bound and determined to get started on a speed reading course. Katie used Jordan Harry who co-founded StudyFast.uk so if it’s good enough for a 3 to 4 book per week reader, it’s good enough for me!

As part of our coaching process, we have a book club approach to suggest the best reads for our clients so that they don’t need to worry so much about picking a bad book. This keeps them learning and growing…so they don’t rot. If you need help in your business, reach out, and let’s jump on a quick call.
