Most of us haven’t had to feel what it’s like to bonk. Myself included. I’ve talked with people who have experienced it and I end up saying to myself, “Wow, I hope that never happens to me!”

So, you may be asking yourself… What is Bonking?

Bonking is more commonly referred to as, hitting the wall, and it refers to the body depleting glycogen that stores in the liver and muscles causing you to come to a point where you just can’t continue exercising. Furthermore, bonking is most prevalent in endurance sports such as ruing and cycling.

A friend of mine bonked during a half ironman and told me it was unlike anything he’d ever experienced in his life. He couldn’t continue, and there was nothing he could do to change it.

Mild cases can be remedied by eating or drinking carb-rich substances in addition to stopping or reducing exercise. Severe cases will land you in a medical tent for an IV and monitoring. The truth is, most of us won’t face a bonk due to an endurance event, but what about a bonk in your business or life?

One of the clients I had recently worked with experienced just that. She had done everything both physically and mentally possible to break through the wall she had hit in her business, but she was spent, worn out, and couldn’t see the finish line in sight. As she threw her hands in the air and said, “This is it! The walls are collapsing and it’s all over!” she was wrong.

Following our theoretical sit down on the side of the road, she started to regain a positive perspective, the nutrients of goals and processes visibly began reshaping her mindset, pretty soon, the attitude of ‘I think I can’ surfaced through the fog of disillusionment. Step by step, she was back in the race and speeding up towards the finish line.

As a business coach, it is my duty and obligation to ask the important questions so I can understand where the client is and how they got there. Had they made wrong turns throughout their journey? Had they prepped and prepared for success? Where do they really want to end up? Is finishing the race still vitally important to them?

It was and still is such an inspiration to watch people regain belief. People performing at their best are inspiring in sports, business, and all walks of life! It’s what separates the successful people from the complacent.
