Usain Bolt is a world record holder in the 100m, 200m, and 4 x 100m relay. He has won 8 gold medals and is the only sprinter to win a gold medal in the 100m and 200m in three consecutive Olympics! He’s incredible to watch and his infectious smile just adds to his exuberance. But the business world is not competing in a sprint right now. In our current environment, it would suit us best to prepare for a marathon or an ultra-marathon.

Preparation is the Key

The biggest key to a successful marathon is preparation. Now let’s not get confused, just because Bolt is a sprinter doesn’t mean that he didn’t have to prepare. That’s not the point. It’s really about the training you put in before, and the plan you follow throughout the entire competition. The time that it takes Bolt to run the 100m is less than 10 seconds, whereas world record marathoners finish their race in just under 2 hours! And for us? Don’t even ask, right? In order to finish the race, you must continue to take one step at a time. Let’s fast forward through preparation and talk about the race itself.

Pace Yourself

If the gun went off and you started sprinting during a marathon, you’d be sitting on the curb catching your breath after about a quarter-mile. The secret is to maintain a steady pace throughout the entire race. The same is true for your business right now. The phrase ‘slow and steady wins the race’ comes to mind, but slow is a relative term. So, perform at the maximum pace you can sustain over time, and you’ll be on the right track.

Roadblocks are Inevitable

What may seem like a lack of progress is an aspect of the process. Most marathon courses have slight inclines and we’re experiencing one of those in the business realm right now. The good news is that what goes up, must come down! As long as you can get to the peak, the downhill will feel much better. So, prepare by plotting your course of action, be prepared for unexpected occurrences, gut it out, and continue taking that next step…one step at a time…and you’ll make it to the finish line!

No matter where you’re at in the race, we’ll be happy to walk you through our coaching process and see how we can support your goals through this marathon.
