We’ll all look back at the year 2020 with amazement someday. I’m pretty sure there won’t be a repeat for, well hopefully forever! I can’t imagine that so many happenings, in any given year, could earn the label “Cluster-Jack” like we’ve seen this year. Yet, we’re still so fortunate because even through all of this, the silver linings through those clouds are visible and perceivable.

One thing that 2020 can’t take away from us is our cherished memories from years past. I put my lights up over the Thanksgiving holiday, started listening to Christmas carols in my car, and spent time reminiscing about prior years. I remember my kids’ excitement as they counted down the days to Christmas, their visiting with Santa Claus at the mall, getting together with family and business holiday parties.

Some other fun memories were when I’d come home from work and be asked to help my sons get past a certain level playing Mario Sunshine on the Nintendo Game Cube. That was back when they couldn’t run video game circles around me. I also remember my daughter, the youngest of the three, still ruing to greet me with a big hug when I got home from work.

Yeah, those times will never be forgotten. So, when you think about challenges that you’re facing and how it seems like there’s no hope in sight, your situation can’t take your memories away from you. Just stop, close your eyes, and ponder for a while. It might bring laughter or a few tears, but give it a try. It’s a wonderful experience that will leave you thinking, ‘hmmm…why haven’t I done that before?’

This year for the holidays, you may not get the opportunity to be with those you love. I challenge you to give each family member an assignment to come up with their favorite holiday memories and have them ready to discuss during your family zoom or conference call. This is cool too! Your siblings will remind you of things you forgot and the same goes for your spouse and children.

The goal of all of this pondering and the search of the silver lining is to help you find a way to transition your whole attitude to one of being thankful for what you’ve got and where you are right now. As you look forward to the new year, remember that many times, out of the depths can come greatness…greatness that you’re destined for in your future.
