Growing up near Mieapolis, when I did, it was almost a given that you were, to some degree or another, a Prince fan! The Purple Rain movie and concert tour were a huge hit, and I remember scraping money together to buy tickets just for the nosebleeds. Rest in peace to the Purple One.

That said, only a true Prince fan would be familiar with his hit, “There’s Joy in Repetition,” released on the 1990 album Graffiti Bridge. So where am I going with this?

After reading an article about one of the greatest athletes of all time, Serena Williams won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, second, only to Australia’s Margaret Court who won 24 and retired over 40 years ago. In addition to her singles record, Williams won an additional 14 doubles, 4 mixed doubles Grand Slams, and 4 Olympic gold medals. So, do you think Serena can relate and believe that “There’s Joy in Repetition”?

Keep in mind, it’s not just about winning. Let’s be honest, how much time and effort did she dedicate to perfecting her craft? How many serves, forehands, backhands, overheads, and net volleys has she hit? How many hours has she spent in the gym or on the treadmill? It’s obvious that it takes a tremendous amount of effort and dedication to be at the top of the world in a sport. But, what can we take away from this?

Being your best doesn’t come by accident… it takes REPETITION!! Practice, practice, practice. Practice is the name of the game! Stay sharp, and invest in your development! It breeds the cutting edge to overcome your competition. Seek out wise counsel, and continue to learn as you go, so you’ll improve throughout your repetitions.

In fact, I found that a Habit Tracker was the best tool to help me improve my repetitions long-term! Using my, “Building Positive Habits Tracker” below, you will be able to not only create but maintain those positive habits over time.

So, where does the joy come from? It’s obvious that what you can do off the court, or invest in, to better yourself, will translate to positive outcomes when it matters most; during the big game, contest, or match. It’s never more obvious than it is in business. Own the joy in repetition so you can reap the rewards.
