I was recently asked to take a Harvard Grad School questioaire as part of a thesis project for a friend.
The questioaire was looking to make correlations between business success and the factors that supported or detracted from ultimately achieving that success. Before touching on those positive factors, let’s take a look at what didn’t make the list of items significantly and positively influencing success. Education, credit history, an extroverted personality type, and prior experience in owning a business. Now, does having these items working in your favor help your success? I’m sure it can’t hurt. But let’s talk about the most important factors according to the study.
1. Perseverance – Sound familiar? Is this built into you and your understanding of success? It really should be unless you’re wandering around searching for the silver bullet to catapult you to success without putting in the effort.
Michelangelo said it best, “If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.”
2. Time in Your Community is the 2nd factor. This is why you hear experienced business owners saying things like, “It’s going to take some time. Don’t expect to be successful overnight.” This obviously ties back into #1 because, without perseverance, you won’t be around long enough to earn and experience the level of success that you desire.
3. The 3rd tip could be summarized as “go back and review #1 and #2.” But, there is another important factor in the mix here that interrelates, and that is Support from a Significant Other.
Make sure that their buy-in is there and that their commitment and understanding of what it’s going to take has been thoroughly “vetted.” Even though this factor is not required for success, a lack of support from a significant other translates into a 92% fail rate!
Who do you want to be and how do you want to approach your goals, hopes, and dreams? In coaching, I call this process Ready, Set, Success! Because once you get started down the path in the right way, it’s just a matter of time before you become a positive statistic in business, sales, or leadership success.
