Remember the last time that you were on a roll? A time when the task at hand seemed effortless, thoughtless, and you had the feeling that you just couldn’t fail. Now try something with me, stop reading this, close your eyes, and think of that time. Ok, now that you’ve got it, think of as many details as possible; like who, what, when, where, why, and how. Write down the details as you recall them and truly relive the time. Now close your eyes again, take a deep breath and see if you can think of the scent, the temperature, the weather, the sounds associated, and how you felt inside.

Can’t think of a time that you were on a roll? How about a time that you were really enjoying the moment. Last night, I had tickets to the closing night of a musical that my daughter was in. I knew I wouldn’t see her in this particular musical and role, most likely, ever again. Sure, she will be in other productions in the future, but looking on in amazement and love as I watched this young lady who was once just a little girl, performing with everything she had. That was special. Think of that time for you. How did it make you feel?

What exactly are we trying to accomplish here? Well, it’s quite obvious that when we’re feeling good, inspired, driven, and focused… we can deliver better results. We can influence more people as a leader, and we can get more done in less time…because we’re on a roll and nothing can stop us!

Inspiration is defined as the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something. You, in an inspired state of mind, can really achieve greatness. Yes, greatness! “The world is your oyster” kind of greatness. Sometimes, the headwinds can blow pretty hard, can’t they? When I go for a ride on my road bike and I’m heading north and there’s a strong southbound wind, it’s a bear. I’m putting in more effort and the results are far less than desirable. Life’s challenges will give us similar results, heartaches, and pains. But just like on the bike where you’ve got to keep pedaling, in life we’ve got to keep putting one foot in front of the other. But why is it that some people, at the first sign of resistance, fold over like a cheap tent in the wind?

Guess what…? Life is a roller coaster, full of ups and downs. You’ve got to resist the temptation to throw in the towel in business, in life, in relationships, you name it. The good news is that once I finish riding against the wind, putting in all of that hard work, drinking most of my water, talking to myself out loud to keep going, you’re almost there, that hard work pays off. Now I turn and head south and I get to enjoy a strong tailwind and I’m breaking records and smoking down the road. You’ve put in your work in business, in life, in your relationships, and now, you’re reaping the benefits of that hard work. You-are-on-a-Roll so crush it while you can!

Now, close your eyes one more time and imagine accomplishing your goal, breaking your records, taking your relationships to a new high, becoming the person who you didn’t always know you could…but you can. Again, think of as many details as you can and own it. How does that make you feel? If you’ve done this properly, you should feel some fire in your belly. It may feel like anxiety but it’s actually energy. You’ve got a small fire burning inside of you. It’s MOTIVATION! And if you can harness motivation, you can ride it to the moon. If you can produce your own motivation, you’ll become the best you that you can be. Ultimately, the best of the best have this mastered. Sure, they still utilize coaches to keep them on track but they’ve mastered the power of motivation and they can’t easily be stopped. Again, I’ll finish where I started; remember the last time that you were on a roll? You can and you will return to that state sooner than you think!
